Travel Log – Entry 3

Wow – this has been a crazy trip. We’re having a great time – but I really do miss checking in with you all! I’m sorry if you’ve left a comment and I haven’t responded yet. I promise I’ve read them all and I’ll be getting back to you as soon as I get home. :)

But in the meantime I have some more travel pics for you.

I’ve mentioned it before – on our road trips we do our very best to not eat at “chain” restaurants if we can help it. It’s a great way to try the local food and go to places that we wouldn’t normally try. I don’t know if any of you are fans of the show Diners, Dives, and Drive-In’s – but there are little places like they find on that show everywhere. People who are wonderful cooks just doing their thing in small towns all over the country.

This is a great example – Jill’s Dairy Breeze in Seagrove, North Carolina. :) Not too fancy and not someplace that you might ordinarily think of stopping at - but seriously good hamburgers. I mean really yummy.

Plus they obviously had good taste in flower accessories. . . How can you go wrong?

Apparently Seagrove is the pottery capital of North Carolina. There are little pottery shops EVERYWHERE. We browsed through about 10 or so before we pooped out. A lot of them are in very old houses or sheds – really sweet.

We ate at a fun Catfish place in Jackson Tennessee – Catfish Cabin. Cornmeal fried catfish, homemade hushpuppies, and coleslaw. Need I go on?

Skipping ahead to Memphis – we ate at our favorite barbeque place -

And overdid it with the best frozen custard and flavored ice in the world:

Get the Gelati – layers of frozen custard and flavored ice. Have a bite of mango peach ice, then a bite of vanilla custard, then a bite of mango peach ice. . .

It’s true – you can get ice, custard, and happiness there. haha.

And lastly – the White House of Memphis -

Elvis has left the building, and so did we. I won’t bore you with all the pictures I took inside, and my new CD, and all the other stuff – but suffice it to say that we had a great time.

Amarillo here we come!

PS – looking back at this post it’s pretty clear we’re all about the food – yes – we’re eating our way across the country. Me and my scale have made a compromise – I won’t overdue it too much and it won’t freak out when I get home and break. I’ll let you know how that turns out. :)

Travel Log – Entry 2

Howdy! Yes, I’m embacing everything Southern right now. I love it down here. Everyone is friendly, they smile all the time, they’re polite. It’s weird. Good but weird.

Ready for some more trip pictures??

I wanted to introduce you to a little enormous friend I met in Texas. Good Night Nurse this thing was huge. I know everything in Texas is supposed to be bigger but this is ridiculous.

On to New Orleans. We ate at Cafe du Monde for breakfast. Sort of breakfast. Does powdered sugar with some doughnut under it count as breakfast? I don’t care  – either way it was awesome.

The architecture was beautiful. Wonderful, scrolly goodness.

I’m putting a blank space here for the restaurant we ate at last night. I’m of the firm belief that if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

So on to Georgia. :)

Stone Mountain is super cool. .

And I just had to share with you this pretty heart-shaped leaf. Sweet huh?

We ate at a great Italian place in Gainesville Georgia with our family here.

It was in an old historical house.

And here’s our crazy bunch. :)

Off to North Carolina tomorrow!

Travel Log – Entry 1

Hey kids – I wanted to share with you a few goodies from the first few days of our road trip. I promise to not make you too crazy with vacation photos. :)

La Posta is a restaurant outside of Los Cruses that my Dad grew up eating at. Seriously yummy.

Then we ran into a bit of weather – not too bad – but we don’t get much in the way of thunderstorms in Carlsbad so it was a nice sight.

(I promise not photoshopped at all. God is a much better painter than I am. :)

This was a beautiful tree at a Rest Stop in Texas. Pretty and Rest Stop don’t really go together in California – but they do in Texas. haha

We ate at the craziest place for dinner. It was called Prejean’s and it was outside of Lafayette.

It was fun and hokey and we loved it. They had a great band playing local music.

And yummy food. We tried frog legs, alligator, and crawfish. All of which I liked but the frog legs. Too fishy. The catfish stuffed with crab and crawfish was the best.

We’re having lots of fun – thanks for hanging in there with me. :)
