Spider Glam Halloween Wreath

So in case you missed it, earlier in the week I shared my Witchy Glam Halloween Mantel!

I wanted to share with you a little tutorial on the Spider Glam Halloween Wreath. This wreath is super quick and easy - and it’s full of bling!

It has a sweet little spider and some fancy chains and brooches – something all the coolest Witches are displaying this Halloween!

This really goes together super fast. To make you’re own you’ll need:

  • Grapevine Wreath
  • Black Spray Paint
  • 4 Brooches
  • Assorted lengths of chain
  • Largish Spider
  • Chiffon and Lace strips for flowers
  • Hot glue

Start off by spraying the snot out of your wreath – you want to get it really black. This will take several coats to make sure all the grapevines in the center are covered.
I used glossy so it was nice and shiny – but any black would work.

Create loose fabric flowers. For the Chiffon flowers, cut long strips about 4″ wide. Fold the strip in half long ways and run a gathering stitch along the raw ends. Gather up the strip and then glue the strip onto a small felt circle, swirling the chiffon into layered circles to make a loose flower. Repeat with the lace.

Glue the flowers onto the wreath with the lace flower in the center.

To give the spider a little bling we’re going to do a little spider surgery. Cut a slit in the largest part of the body. (This guy came from the dollar store)

Choose a button with a shank on it and glue the shank into the slit in the spider’s body.
See? I even left glue gun strings there as proof. That was on purpose.

Glue two brooches (or buttons, anything bling-y really) onto the chiffon flowers and glue the spider onto the lace flower.

For the chain portion of the wreath, I wanted to have the option to reuse these brooches later, and that’s hard to do when they’re covered in hot glue.
So I ”pinned” the brooches to the wreath. Just open up the pins and slip them through a few branches, then close them up!
Thread several different lengths of chain through the pins so that they form a little chain swag.

And that’s it!! Super easy right?

I think that chain swag is my favorite part. :)

And here it is on the mantel again!

So I’d love to know – what are you doing for Halloween? Do you change up your decorations every year?

Witchy Glam Halloween Mantel

I’m so excited to share this year’s Halloween Mantel with you!
I just love decorating for Halloween! It’s definitely my favorite after Christmas.

If’ you’ve been around here a couple of years, you know that I tend to go for a Spooky kind of “Haunted Mansion” feel  for Halloween rather than anything too scary – if you want you can check out last year’s Gothic Skeleton mantel and the year before’s Mantel on a Budget!

This year I went for a little more bling and we’ve got a whole Witchy Glam feel to the mantel this year!

Isn’t it fun? Here are some closer looks!

I’ll have a full Spider Glam Wreath Tutorial for you later this week – but for now you can see that it’s all fun bling and chains!

We also seem to have a bit of a crow problem – and since we just watched The Birds here, the kids are loving these guys. So is Kato - he tends to steal them and leave them around the house with teeth marks in them.

I’ve got some fun bottles I picked up from Micheal’s and decorated with a little spray paint and some pretty brooches. It’s hard to tell in the photos but there are lots of touches of dark purple in the ribbons other decor to balance out the black and white and gray.

I also made a fun little Banner  – it’s all blinged up with beads and velvet paper! (I had no idea they sold such stuff – I love it!) I will have the download for you later this week too!
There’s a little Broom I spray painted  black and dressed up with a bow – because you can’t really have a Witchy Mantel without a broom!

I just love how it turned out!

Soooo – what do you think?? I’d love to know! :)

Halloween Mantels

Patchwork Knob Rack

I have such a fun project to share with you today!

It’s a fun combination of sewing and woodworking – and I think it’s got a fun Anthropologie-esque sort of feel to it.
(Which let’s face it, is obviously my preferred decorating style) :)

I’ve been needing a cute little rack to hold my aprons near the kitchen and I think this little Patchwork Knob Rack will be perfect!

I have a little collection of Anthro door pulls and knobs – I can’t seem to pass them up when they’re on clearance.
So I snagged three different ones from my stash for the knobs – just to give it a fun kitschy look.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own rack:

  • 1″ x 4″ board – 36″ long
  • 3 drawer pulls or knobs – you will want to choose some that have a bit of an extension and don’t sit flush against the wood)
  • Assorted fabric pieces
  • Pellon Woven Fusible Interfacing (optional)
  • thin batting
  • Staple Gun
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Hanging hardware

Start by cutting out your fabric pieces. You’ll want them to be 7 1/2″ tall (to cover and wrap around the board) and you’ll want them to total about 50″ to have enough to cover the board and for seam allowances.

Sew your pieces together and press the seams to the sides, from the center out.

If you have used some thin fabrics, stabilize everything by ironing the fusible woven interfacing to the back of the patchwork piece.

Now – here’s a “don’t do as I did” moment. I recommend you drill the holes for your knobs BEFORE you put on the batting and fabric. If you do it after – it is very easy for the drill to get all caught up in the batting.
Not that I did that or anything. But let’s just say, if you do? You could end up with a cotton candy ball of batting stuck to your drill. So attractive.

So you’ll want to mark and drill your holes (again, ignoring the fabric already on here!! :)

On the wrong side of the board, I recommend you drill a larger hole with a forstner bit – so that you can sink in the nut and it won’t stick out of the back and scratch up your wall.
(Forstner Bits are super handy - and not too pricey if you pick them up at Harbor Freight.)

Cut a layer (or two, depending on how padded you want the rack) of batting the size of your board. Lay it along the top of the rack. You can keep it in place with a little hot glue.

Cut another piece of batting the size of your patchwork piece. Place it on the wrong side of the fabric.

Lay the fabric right side down, then place the board with the batting side down, centered on top of it.

Begin stapling the fabric to the back of the board.

Work your way down one side of the board, then flip it and do the other side. Leave the ends until last.

Trim the fabric and batting away from the corner piece so it won’t be so bulky.

Fold the end in and staple, then pleat the side and fold it in. Staple it so it has a nice tidy end.

Now you’re all ready to add the hardware!

Mark the outside of the fabric above the holes. Cut small holes in the fabric for the hardware.

Place the hardware through the fabric and then through the holes. On the back side, mark the threads where you’ll need to cut them off.

Cut off the screws with a hack saw or dremel. Place the hardware back in place and hold in place with the nut.

If the screw still sticks out a bit – you can cover that with a little cap or piece of felt glued over it.

Mine had two regular draw pulls, the third had a base that just screwed into the top.

Add your hanging hardware to the back – and that’s it!!

I have some plans for the wall this is going on – so you’ll have to wait to see it in place for a bit. But it looks really cute!

What do you think? I’d love to know!
