I’ve been having fun making some things for Becka’s room – we’re working on it slowelllllly. She’s super organized and loves to make notes and schedules (which is completely unlike her mom) so when I was sent some awesome Handmade Charlotte stencils I decided to make her a little Chalkboard “To Do” Sign!
This little sign is super easy to do – and I love how it turned out! The colors are perfect for her new room and I love how the little notepaper stencil looks – so fun to write out school assignments and reminders.
So are you ready to make one?
You’ll need:
- Handmade Charlotte Stencil
- Folk Art Paint
- foam brush/stencil brush
- 1 wood shape – I found this cute scalloped cutout at Michaels
- chalkboard coating
- posterboard/fabric/mod podge for edging
- fabric and glue for hanging bow
Here’s the awesome stencil I used. It has a lot of different stencils in the pack – chore charts, clocks, growth charts, a cute kitchen stencil, a cloud, and my to do stencil!
Soooo many options.
Start by doing a basecoat on your plaque. I used white.
I wanted to do a chevron design on the background, but I didn’t want to stencil the whole plaque because I didn’t want the little chevron lines to show up under the To Do notepaper.
So I punched out the To Do lettering and notepaper and taped them in place on the board.
If you’re doing a similar chevron design, mark out the high and low points of the chevrons lightly with a pencil. Tape off the design. Mine is thin, I used painter’s tape that I cut in half.
Stencil on the color, making sure to not get any paint under the tape or stencil.
Take off all the tape and remove the inside of the stencil pieces. You’ll have your chevron lines, plus the negative space where the stencil will go.
Once your paint completely dries, tape on the stencil. With these cardboard stencils I recommend using painters tape to hold the stencil on in several places, so when the cardboard gets a little wet from the paint, it won’t curl up.
Stencil the area completely with a contrasting color of paint.
Cover the notebook paper section with chalkboard coating, according to the directions on the bottle.
Create a posterboard covered bias tape for the edging of the plaque, like we did with the Monogrammed letters. You’ll cut a piece of posterboard the width of the plaque, and a piece of fabric twice as wide. Using Mod Podge, glue the fabric around the posterboard, then glue the strip to the edge of the plaque.
Cut (or tear if you wanted frayed edges) a piece of fabric that will be your bow. Tie it in a nice big bow and glue the ends to the back of the plaque.
Hang up your To Do Sign and admire the cuteness!
Treat the chalkboard section by rubbing chalk all over it, then wiping it off. Then you can write on it just like a regular chalkboard!
So fun right?
