Ready for more Kitchen Christmas fun??
If you’ve visited Flamingo Toes before you have probably figured out I’m not a scrapbooker. I was in some other line when that gene was handed out.
Possibly the Vulcan Salute line.
Not sure.
I can cut a straight line in fabric though, just by eyeballing it. (Probably comes from working in a Fabric store for years). But I can’ t cut a straight line in paper to save my life, much less do fancy scrolly nifty cuts and things. I have tried, believe me. It’s not pretty.
So when I decided I wanted to make some fun Candy Jars for Christmas – I decided to go with the medium I know. Fabric!
Want to see?
I had these fun enormous canning jars – and all the fabric from the Retro Dishtowels – so this was a freebie craft! Love it.
If you’d like to make a set, you’ll need:
- Canning Jars
- Fabric for Labels
- Freezer Paper
- Fabric for Strips
- Felt
- Embroidery Floss
Ever since the Bowl of Eyeballs, I’ve wanted to do another project that uses printing on fabric. This was perfect!
To start, cut a piece of fabric 8 1/2″ x 11″. Cut a piece of freezer paper the same size. Iron the fabric onto the shiny side of the freezer paper. Try not to have any bubbles in the fabric, these will get caught in your printer and cause little ink marks.
Print the image out onto the paper. Run it through your printer like you would normally. Here’s the download if you’d like to use these labels.

You can see at the top of the fabric that it has some ink marks on it from the printer. I had a similar problem on the “Eyeballs” project so I spaced the images lower on the fabric to try and stay away from that.
Cut out the labels, leaving a small border around the red. I left the freezer paper on while I cut them out, it made it a little easier. You can remove it after this step though. It just peels off.
Cut out a piece of felt for each label, a little larger than the fabric.
Cut out strips of fabric for your jars. Mine are pretty big, so my strips were 2 1/2″ x 19″. I wanted about 1″ overlap in the back.
Sew a running stitch with embroidery on both long sides of your fabric strips.
Yes. That is one enormous needle. You make do with what you can find. :)
Using the same running stitch, but different color thread, stitch your label and felt to the center of the fabric strip.
Press the label and strips. One of the advantages I’ve found to printing on fabric is that you can iron right over it, unlike a transfer. Though I haven’t washed any ink-jet printed fabric yet. I don’t know what that would do but I don’t think it would be good.
Glue the label to the jar in the back by overlapping the strip. Add a couple dots of glue under the top and bottom of the label. Remind your hubby that you’d like a new glue gun for Christmas because yours is the PITS.
Fill up your jars with tempting Christmas-y treats!
Santa’s Jar has some Hershey Kisses – Mint Truffle flavor. Santa’s pretty excited about that.
I don’t know what Sugar Plums are – but I figured those chewy-sugary bell things were close enough. And pretty tasty.
What do you think? Are homespun fabric labels as cute as paper labels? I think they’re pretty close!

Super cute! I love that you used fabric!!
Katie says
I love the fabric, gives it such a nice homespun feel and lovely texture. Plus it’s nice to see an alternative to a peel and stick label.

I’ve just seen this done with labels! Love that I can do it with freezer paper! Do you think you can wash the fabric? I’m thinking not, since the ink is not permanent. I don’t know if you can change the ink to permanant to make it more useable.
