Four Cute Shirts, 1 Cute Dress, and 1 Cute Dog

Oh my goodness this has been a busy week. And it’s only half over. I feel like we’re on the top of a roller coaster and we’re picking up speed. :)

We had a house-full this weekend which was a blast and I wanted to share with you some of our girly crafting time  – dressing up some simple t-shirts with ribbons and roses.

We had such a great time – just brainstorming and sewing and generally making a mess. haha.

I have some closeups for you and a little rundown for each if you’d like to reduplicate any of them.

This one was a fun combination of ribbon with little birdies and cute buttons. I love the gray and orange together. Until we made this one I didn’t realize I could sew buttons on with my machine. A whole new world has opened up for me. ;)

For this one we box pleated the black and white ribbon and sewed it on, then covered the seam with a sheer black ribbon. We finished it off with a black bow and a button – and I think the contrast looks great. It looks really feminine and pretty on too.

Mmmm. This one is just yummy. It’s the combo of the black and white on the gray, I think. The white lace is a a piece leftover from the lace used on my friend’s wedding dress. It’s gorgeous. There’s a pretty ribbon rose over it with some pearls in the middle.

This one has the most detail and I think it’s so pretty. It has that same wedding lace and it’s finished off with ric rac (heeeeyyyyy) and some ribbon roses.

And here’s my favorite – this little lady picked out her ribbons and outlined exactly what she wanted done with them on her dress.
She is a fashionista. :)

There’s a ruffle of tulle and ribbon at the bottom, and a few ribbon roses and a pleated ribbon as an accent at the top.

Ok. Really. Now how adorable is she??

Last but not least – the Cute Dog portion of the post. I couldn’t resist sharing with you my sister’s darling puppy in her Bat costume.

Meet Darcy.

My sister made her bat wings that attach to her harness out of white felt. She painted chocolate brown spots on them to match Darcy’s brown spots. Doesn’t it look great with her big bat ears?? haha.

Darcy’s only 5 months old but she was such a good girl for her photo shoot. :)

Also – my Ballard Inspired Spool Table was featured over at Remodelaholic today!! woohoo – Thanks Cassity!

So was that a lot of cuteness or what?? ;)

What Do You Think About . . .

Hello all!

I wanted to take a midweek minute and check in with you all about a few things. Flamingo Toes has been building a little corner of the web for just over 6 months now. Wow. I am having such a great time sharing crafts, and getting to know you.

I love the way things are going, but I think there is always room for improvement and adjustment – and that is where you come in. :)
I have some questions for you – and if you have time to give your opinions I think it will be fun to see how things evolve over the next 6 months.

I have seen blogs around that do a weekly schedule. So Tutorials on Monday – Recipes on Wednesday – Fish Fry’s on Friday. That sort of thing. Would you like that, having a little more structure so that you know what to expect? Or do you like the willy nilly flow of things?

What is your favorite type of post? Is there something you’d like to see more of?

On the flip side of that coin – what’s your least favorite thing? Anything you’re sick of? (This can be post related, layout related, whatever.)
Don’t worry – you won’t make me cry. ;) Unless you’re a meany. Then it’s entirely possible.

How do you feel about comment replies? I realllly like to reply to your comments – but sometimes it just takes tons of time and wipes me out and leaves me with no clean clothes because I’m spending all my time on the computer. Would it mightily offend you if I didn’t reply to every comment? Maybe 75% of comments? Will you be very sad and stop hanging around?

What would you think about a Tutorial Request feature? If there is something that you have been wanting to learn or see something that would be a great knockoff – you could send me an email and it could potentially be an upcoming tutorial!
(Assuming you’re not suggesting I knock-off someone in the taking-someone-out-because-they-stole-your-chocolate-cake way. That would be wrong. And make for a messy tutorial.)

Thanks for taking the time to answer  – I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Anthro Knockoff – Into the Woods Necklace

Have you been pining for an Anthro Necklace? I have been pining, I must admit.
And as we’re creeping hurtling closer and closer to the holidays, I’m always on the lookout for inexpensive ways to give cool gifts. :)

So of course I went “shopping” at my favorite place to knockoff – Anthropologie. I found the cutest necklace – duh- and I fell in love.

This time we’re doing a version of their “Into the Woods” necklace.
Here is mine . . .

And here’s the Anthro Original . . .

Same basic idea – but I wanted mine to be a bit more neutral so I can wear it with more things.
(yes. despite the nearness of the holidays I’m keeping this for myself. But I had to make one as a sample in case it didn’t turn out. Right? Hmmm?)

Though I do love that retro, floral ribbon. If I find any of that I’ll probably have to make another one.

Ready to make your own?
Here’s what you’ll need.

• Twill tape or decorative ribbon (about 1 yd)
• 2 yards of narrow cream ribbon (needs to fit through your beads)
• wooden beads (16)
• Accent Beads (2 large & 6 or 7 small)
• Headpins and eyepins
• Needle and thread
Round nose pliers and wire cutters

Start with getting your accent beads ready. We’re going to put them on eye pins, which are wires that have a loop in one end.
Thread the pin onto the bead and bend the wire at the other end of the bead.

Hold your wire with the round nosed pliers, snug against the bead. Wrap the wire around one side of the pliers so that it makes a loop.

With your wire cutters, trim off the excess wire. Make sure you face the wire cutters away from you.

After you’ve clipped the wire, with the round nose pliers finish making the loop. Repeat with the other accent bead.

Follow this same process only with head pins for your small beads. Put the wire through the bead and make a small loop in one end.

Open up one of the loops at the end of a large accent bead and join it to the other large accent bead.
Open up the loops of the small beads and add them to the loops between the two large beads.
You want the area between the beads to look pretty full.

Cut an 18″ piece of your narrow ribbon and knot it around one loop of a large accent bead.

It might help to thread your ribbon through a large needle.

Pull the ribbon through a large wooden bead and knot the ribbon after the bead to hold it in place.

Add two more beads the same way, knotting after each bead.

Cut a 54″ piece of ribbon and knot it to the loop on the other side of the bead cluster.

Add wooden beads until the bottom section measures your desired length. I used 16 beads and I knew that I wanted it to be a bit uneven.

Knot one end of the twill tape around the left side of the bead strand, catching the narrow ribbons in the knot.

Trim the narrow ribbons and the twill. Turn the short twill end under and with the narrow ribbons inside, stitch the twill down.
Use tiny stitches so they don’t show from the front.

Measure again the length you’d like your necklace.
Cut your twill and knot and sew the other side.

Cut a small piece of twill for the bow.  Overlap the ends and sew down the middle so there is a small gather.

Cut another small piece for the center of the bow and wrap that around tightly and sew.

Sew the bow to the right side of the necklace above the knot.

You’re all done!
I love the contrast of the pearls and the wood.

And the obligatory picture of me wearing the necklace.

(To understand my weird facial expression you need to know that our neighbor’s mangy cat was giving me the stink-eye from our fence.
You don’t turn your back on this particular cat.)

At least the necklace is cute. ha.

I can think of tons of combinations for this – it would be so cute in black and white – with big black beads and pearls and an ivory satin ribbon, maybe even a cameo where the bow is.

What colors/styles would you make this in?
I’d love to hear what you think.
