Crush of the Week – mmmcrafts

It’s time for the Crush of the Week! Woo hoo – I love it. Plus it’s Friday – which is always a beautiful thing.

This week I’m highlighting a very special blogger. Larissa from mmmcrafts. Larissa is part of the reason I started blogging. I found her site one day looking for a monkey pattern. And I just fell in love with her creativity and writing and all around coolness. :) She can really do just about anything – it’s pretty amazing.

So before I start gushing (believe me, that wasn’t gushing yet) - here is just a sampling of her creativity -

The pattern I fell in love with – Molly Monkey. This is a FREE pattern – did you hear me? Free. You gotta love that.

Here’s my niece with her Molly Monkey – she loves to mash her hat down.

Check out this darling messenger bag tutorial. This is on my to-do list – which is longer than the Declaration of Independence. And if you look around her site you can see all the adorable variations she’s done.

And one of her most recent – this super cute owl paper tutorial that she guest posted at Skip To My Lou. She has some amazing paper art on her blog. (I need to get a thesaurus. I can’t come up with enough words to describe the niftyness. :) You have to check out her Red Riding Hood artwork.

So are you impressed?? I am – every time I check my mmmcrafts feed. :) Head on over – you know you want to. And take some coffee – Larissa loves it. :)

Top Five Friday

It’s time for Top Five Friday – except I’m bucking the rules and having a Top Six. Shhh. I’m a rebel.

Today I want to highlight some of my favorite people – some wonderful folks who’ve made things they’ve seen on Flamingo Toes. I really do love it when you make something. I feel like Sally Fields – as weird as that is – “You like it. You really like it!!” Sorry – that was random.

But on to these awesome creations. (And if you haven’t noticed – I have a handy new page titled “You’ve Made It”. I’m posting images there of things that you make – so if you give something a try shoot me an email!)

These are some new projects – but if you missed Adorkable Annie’s super cute serving tower – you can check it out here.

Melody from A Quiet Little Life made her version of the Ruffle Flower Bag for her daughter. It matches her dress. How great is that??

Here are two versions of the Anthro-Serving Tower.

Sarah’s Farm Report posted this sweet Blue Willow tower. Isn’t this classic looking?

Anj from Snowy Bliss made this amazing tower – complete with creme puffs. Click on the picture to view her seriously amazing birthday party decorations. I’m hinting for her to fly to Carlsbad next April to throw me a party. :) She hasn’t quite committed to that yet but I think she’s close.

And last but definitely not least, darling Ingrid from Yocktaw has gone for the gold and made 3 things.

Isn’t the pink and black cute together??

The original tutorial for the bead and bow necklace is from Disney at Ruffles and Stuff.

She also made the Boden knockoff bag in this great green color. Isn’t this perfect for summer?

Ingrid also just opened up an Etsy shop – you can check that out here. She has some super cute jewelry on there.

Thanks gals – you are all awesome!!

Lace & Pearl Bracelet

I have another fun Target knockoff to share with you. Last time I was there I stumbled upon a great little bracelet.

Here is my handy camera picture. :)

I love the lace and pearls combined with the leather. So I set out to recreate it. Here’s my version . . .

I have a quick tutorial for you if you’d like to make your own.

You’ll need:

  • leather cording – I used about 28″
  • hem tape lace
  • pearls – I used 16
  • thread
  • a bead with a larger hole in the center
  • optional – a thimble

Start by cutting your cording into 14″ pieces. You’ll trim some of this off later but it’s better to have extra.

Start in the center and work your way down one end – sewing the pearls to the cording. Put your needle through one piece of cording (a thimble helps with this), then through your pearl, then through the other piece of cording. Make a small knot in the thread and then move on to the next pearl. You don’t need to cut your thread, it won’t show once you cover it with the lace.

Continue adding pearls down one side – 8 in all. Wrap your bracelet around your wrist as you go – you might need to do less or more pearls depending on the size of your wrist.

Move to the other side of the cording and add 8 more pearls on that side.

Once your pearls are all sewn on, you can start wrapping your lace. I used hem lace.

Cut a long piece – and start wrapping it around the cording between the pearls. I put the lace through a large yarn needle – this helped thread it between the pearls more easily.

Keep wrapping all the way down one side of the cording.

Repeat with the other side.

Wrap your lace around the cording on one end and knot it. Do this twice in the same place so you have a kind of chunky knot.

Make a second knot about 1/2″ down from the first one around the cording again. Trim your cording and lace so there is about 3 or 4″ hanging after the knot.

On the other side of the bracelet make a chunky knot similar to the first one you did. Trim the cording about 1″ below this. One one piece of the lace thread your bead and knot the lace after it. Trim your lace pieces about 1 – 2″ below this. This is what you will thread through the two knots you make on the other side to hold the bracelet on.

Try it on and admire your new handy-dandy bracelet!!

I hope ya’ll aren’t tired of knock-offs. :)
