Prizes and Packaging

In all the fun and festivities of the Sew Mama Sew giveaway, Flamingo Toes passed the lovely milestone of 100 followers. Rather than do another giveaway so quickly, I decided to award my 100th follower with a little dishtowel of her own. She gave me free reign on color – you gotta love that – and this is what I came up with.

I love this apple fabric, don’t you? And ric-rac? Yummy. I hope she likes it.

To pack up and send off this little sweetie I wanted to try a fun tutorial I had seen a while back on Sew Sweet Stitches. It is for handmade bubble mailers. She has a very clear, easy tutorial so I won’t give you all the steps – you can check out her site for that. But here’s my finished mailer.

It was sooooo easy – just tape and stitch and ta-daaa! Custom, cute, pink mailer! :)

I sewed mine closed – and I wrote the address on the front with a black Sharpie rather than use a label because I’m too lazy busy to go get some.

So it’s off in the mail Tuesday!

And while sewing up this dishtowel and mailer, I got all sentimental and was thinking about how much I appreciate my followers. Being such a newbie to blogging, I really appreciate you guys who check in with what I’m doing occasionally and leave me sweet comments.

And because I appreciate you so much, I’ve decided to have a monthly follower giveaway. I’m still working on this, but the gist of it would be that this would be a giveaway only available to Flamingo Toes followers. No commenting to win.
I’ll pick a day every month – let’s say the 15th just to help me remember – and that day I’ll draw a random follower and award them a prize.

Sometimes it will be something I’ve made recently, but I’ll also scout out some cool etsy shops and do some gift certificates, or a prize from that shop.  What do you think? Sound fun?

I think so too. If you want to win – make sure you have an email or your blog linked up to your follower ID. That way I can get ahold of you. Otherwise the Random thingy will have to pick someone else. :)

So we’ll start with the first Follower giveaway on June 15. About a week before that, I’ll announce the prize for that month on my sidebar – I’ll post it with this picture – so you’ll know what to watch for.

Check back next week for the first prize! (You can check back earlier too if you want to ;)

Summer Flower Flip-Flops

I promised you a few days ago a pair of flip flops to match our cute Summer Flower Tote bag. Here’s what I came up with.

My dad still calls flip-flops “Thongs” – just to freak the kids out. It’s awesome.

These little cuties were pretty easy to make. No machine sewing at all. :)

I started with some clearance Target flip-flops. I paid $2.99 for them. Sweet!

These worked out great because the straps were just ribbons – easy to sew into.

I started by covering the straps with the coral fabric. I sewed the first edge down so it would be easy to pull the fabric tight around the ribbon.

Then I wrapped the fabric around the strap, tucking under the bottom edge and letting the fabric hang over the strap a bit. I sewed this down with black embroidery floss and a running stitch. Then I trimmed and frayed the edge that hung over the strap. I also treated it with Fray-check so it wouldn’t go crazy.

I repeated this step for all the straps.

I didn’t worry too much about the top of the straps, that part will be under the flower.

I made the flower out of three different sized circles.

I ran a gathering stitch around the centers of the circles and then pulled the thread tight. This pulled in the center of each circle.

I layered the three circles, largest to smallest and sewed them together. I finished off the flower with a little shell button.

I then tacked the flower to the center of the flip flop. I also added a little Gorilla Glue for extra insurance and more Fray-check to the edges of the flower.

Super easy right? I love the way they match the bag and they’re super comfortable.

I’ve decided I need to start every day with a beach photo shoot. Not a bad way to start the day. :)

Ready for summer yet???
